Τhe inner ear, is the instrument for the sound, while the labyrinth is the part of the inner ear which sends information on balance and head position to the brain.
Vertigo is the subjective sensation that we are rotating around our surroundings or that our surroundings are rotating around us.
The organ responsible for balance is the vestibular labyrinth.
The inner ear contains the cochlea, which is the specialized organ responsible for hearing, and the labyrinth, which is the part of the ear responsible for balance.
These structures contain fluid that is essential for their normal function, namely the transmission of sound and the maintenance of balance. This fluid contains electrolytes such as potassium, sodium and chloride, and its volume changes in response to increases or decreases in the fluid volume of the rest of the body.
In certain pathological conditions, the concentrations of these electrolytes become disrupted, leading to endolymphatic hydrops. This may cause a feeling of pressure or fullness (a blocked sensation) in the ears, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), hearing loss or fluctuations in hearing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and unsteadiness.
In all cases, consultation with an ENT specialist is essential to perform the necessary examinations and determine the causes of the symptoms, so that appropriate medication, dietary measures or other recommendations can be provided.
